Although many Internet users eagerly await each new technology from Google Inc., its rapid expansion is also prompting concerns that the company may know too much: what you read, where you surf and travel, whom you write.
"This is a lot of personal information in a single basket," said Chris Hoofnagle, senior counsel with the Electronic Privacy Information Center. "Google is becoming one of the largest privacy risks on the Internet."

Microsoft warns of software flaws in Word, Windows

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. warned users on Tuesday of three new security flaws in its Windows and Word software and issued patches to fix the flaws, which could allow attackers to take over a computer system.
All three of the "critical"-rated security patches could potentially allow an attacker to take control of a personal computer and use it to steal data or launch other attacks, said Stephen Toulouse, a manager at Microsoft's Security Response Center.
"The key thing is really that we want to make people understand the risk with these flaws and that they enable automatic updates," said Toulouse, referring to a feature in Windows that downloads and installs the software patches automatically. .................read more

Starcomms roll out mobile data card

ANigeria’s private telecom operator (PTO) Starcomms has rolled out its instant Internet access via wireless mobile data card at an official launch held in Lagos at the just ended NICOMM 2004, an annual event organised by the Association of Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ATCON). Wireless Internet access is catching on globally with the spread of wi-fi. Most notebooks now come with the wireless card compartment.

In Nigeria, hotspots are increasingly gaining grounds.The wireless or mobile data card being offered by Starcomms will operate at an average download speed (DS) of 80kbps but has capacity to reach a maximum DS of 140kbps.Starcomms’ CEO Dirk Smet says the new service is easy to use, fast, and convenient, and requires no special activation charge
